Hello! This is my third post and perhaps the one I was most compelled to write about till now. The way this book has made me see education and life in a very different light, through a set of very different eyes, is truly mind-blowing.
Educated |
Fun Fact (according to me, obviously): I came across this book while watching a youtube video on '20 things to do before you turn 20' and no, I am not going to give any hint of my age. Later, after reading this book, during the research process for my blog, I came to know that Bill Gates recommended this book himself.
This book is something else entirely, a very powerful one and I hope you are in for a rollercoaster ride.
Who Might Give This Book A Shot:
Everyone, if you ask me. Listen to me before concluding that I say that for every book I write about. No, that's not it. Till now all the books I have recommended to you are truly wonderful. Especially this one. Love it or hate it later, but don't miss out on the experience of reading it.
Who Might Like It:
Not everyone who has read it but still the majority would. If you are in for a challenging, messy read, which would possibly make you introspect about your education and learning, I think you will love it.
Who Might Not Love It:
If someone doesn't enjoy it, I can understand some of their feelings about it. Maybe they are suspicious of the accounts recollected in this book throught the memories of a child, though cross-checked by other people as well. The abuse, which is a definite trigger for most people, can prove to make it a difficult read at times. There might be a lot of contoversial things and people but then again, controversies are created by the human beings themselves. Let me warn you beforehand that it is not an easy read.
What It Is All About:
Tara Westover
Whatever one might expect from just looking at the book cover is truly not what they are going to get. They are in for a surprise. The book revolves around Tara Wilson and her experiences at different ages. What an unusual background she comes from is truly intriguing and confusing to many. She was preparing for the end of the world as a child raised by a father who believed that The End was about to come. She had never been to a school or a hospital and was treated by her herbalist mother whenever needed. Her family lived in different beliefs than the others around them, living their lives preparing for The End.
Tara lacked any formal education and began to educate herself. She began questioning the beliefs of people around her, the differences between them and soon her quest for knowledge transformed her life. She left the mountains, the only home she ever knew, for college and then went further and further in her education from Cambridge to Harvard and faraway places. Along the journey, you can read her stuggles to fit in, to discover where she really belonged and the conflicting scenarios she faced with her family. 'Educated' is the collection of memoirs about the outlook to see one's life through new eyes and the astonishingly mighty will to change it.
Self-Invention |
Which Is My Favorite Part of It:
I loved how challenging it was to read and how un-put-down-able it was. I highly admire Tara, in the book and in real-life, for her ability to teach herself what she doesn't know and not give up despite the obstacles. And one of the most mind-blowing facts about the book, for me, was that the stories all occured in the last 25 years, not a different era, it totally gave me a modified perspective.
